“You don’t need to actively cleanse because your body was designed to do that.” WRONG! Why modern life has changed everything.

“You don’t need to actively cleanse because your body was designed to do that.” WRONG! Why modern life has changed everything.

It’s a statement I’ve heard countless times over the years, and every time I hear it, I find myself seething internally. Not because I don’t believe the body is designed to cleanse itself (I absolutely do). In fact, I think the human body is one of the most extraordinary, intelligent systems imaginable. Every second of every day, your liver is processing compounds, your kidneys are filtering your blood, your lungs are exchanging gases, your skin is eliminating waste, and your bowel is carrying material out of the body. It is a masterpiece of design. But whenever someone confidently says, “You don’t need to actively cleanse because your body was designed to do that,” I know that they’re missing the most important part of the conversation.

Every second of every day, your liver is processing compounds, your kidneys are filtering your blood, your lungs are exchanging gases, your skin is eliminating waste, and your bowel is carrying material out of the body. It is a masterpiece of design. But whenever someone confidently says, “Your body doesn’t need to cleanse because it was designed to do that,” I know that they’re missing the most important part of the conversation.

Why Your Body Needs Support To Cleanse

The body was indeed designed to cleanse itself, but it was also designed for a world that no longer exists. That’s the part we seem to overlook. We talk about the brilliance of human physiology as though nothing around us has changed, when in reality almost every aspect of modern life is dramatically different from the environment in which our biology evolved.

Our bodies were designed to wake with the sunrise and wind down by the glow of firelight. They were designed to spend the day moving, gathering food, carrying children, walking long distances and living in constant relationship with nature. We were designed to breathe fresh air after rain, drink clean water from flowing streams, stand barefoot on the earth, swim in rivers, climb trees and experience darkness when the sun disappeared below the horizon. Instead, we spend most of our lives indoors beneath artificial lighting, sitting in chairs, staring at screens, breathing air conditioned air and wondering why our nervous systems feel permanently switched on.

Modern Life Has Increased the Body’s Toxic Load

Sometimes I think we’ve become so accustomed to modern living that we’ve forgotten just how unnatural so much of it really is. We spray our homes with synthetic fragrances because they smell like “fresh linen”, despite the fact that fresh linen once smelled like sunshine and a breeze. We slather our skin with products containing dozens of ingredients we can’t pronounce, then wonder why hormone disruption, allergies and skin conditions have become so common. We clean every surface in our homes with powerful chemicals, yet rarely stop to think about the fact that our lungs have no choice but to inhale them.

We Have Drifted Away From Real Food

Then there’s our food. Somewhere along the way, we’ve drifted so far from real food that many of us now consider products made in factories, wrapped in plastic and covered in health claims to be completely normal. We eat things our great-grandparents wouldn’t have recognised as food. We consume colours, preservatives, emulsifiers, flavour enhancers and ingredients engineered to maximise shelf life rather than nourish the human body. At the same time, we’ve become more disconnected than ever from the simple act of growing, preparing and sharing real food.

This Is Not an Attack on Modern Medicine

And while I’m deeply grateful for modern medicine (and I genuinely am) I also think we’ve become increasingly comfortable accepting the burden of modern living without ever questioning it. This isn’t an article against medicine or technology. Quite the opposite. Modern medicine has saved millions of lives, and technology has transformed the world in extraordinary ways. But gratitude doesn’t mean we should ignore the unintended consequences that have come with those advances.

Today we’re exposed to plastics that are now being detected throughout the human body. We live in environments saturated with synthetic chemicals that simply didn’t exist for the overwhelming majority of human history. We rely on convenience in almost every area of life, and although convenience has made life easier in many ways, it has failed to make us healthier. I think we’ve quietly accepted a level of environmental burden that our bodies were never designed to carry, and then we act surprised when so many people feel exhausted, inflamed, constipated, anxious and disconnected from their health.

How to Support Healthy Elimination

This is why we do need to be proactive. Not because I think the body is incapable of cleansing itself, but because I think we’ve severely increased the workload. Supporting the body’s natural pathways of elimination isn’t about believing the body is broken. It’s about acknowledging the reality of the world we now live in. It’s about reducing unnecessary exposures where we can, choosing real food more often, moving our bodies, sleeping deeply, managing stress, supporting healthy bowel function and helping our remarkable biology do the job it has always been designed to do.

The Fish Tank Analogy

One of the analogies I come back to again and again is that of a fish tank. If you placed a beautiful tropical fish into murky, polluted water and watched it struggle, you wouldn’t blame the fish. You’d immediately recognise that the environment matters. You’d change the water before you ever questioned the fish’s ability to survive. Yet somehow we’ve become comfortable expecting the human body to thrive in an environment that is increasingly artificial while dismissing the idea that it might need support.

Your Body Is Not Failing You

Perhaps that’s why I feel so passionately about this. I don’t believe the human body is failing us. I think it’s doing an extraordinary job under extraordinary circumstances. Every single day it adapts, repairs, compensates and protects us despite the sheer volume of challenges we ask it to manage. To me, supporting the body’s natural cleansing pathways isn’t about chasing wellness trends or trying to outsmart human physiology. It’s about showing respect for the incredible work our bodies are already doing and recognising that, in today’s world, they deserve all the help we can give them.

Supporting Your Body’s Natural Cleansing Pathways

Healthy elimination is one of the cornerstones of your body’s natural cleansing processes. When the bowel isn’t functioning optimally, it can leave you feeling congested, reactive and unwell.

Rojas Colon Hydrotherapy is a gentle, therapist-led, hydration-focused approach that supports healthy elimination, cellular hydration and your body’s natural detoxification processes and pathways.
